OpenUSD All-Stars | OpenUSD Powers Factory Design and Deployment for Geely Automobile
Universal Scene Description, also known as OpenUSD, is an open and extensible ecosystem used to describe, compose, simulate, and collaborate on 3D worlds.
OpenUSD provides critical features and capabilities that enable teams to streamline workflows and accelerate project timelines. Whether creating assets for vast, AI-driven virtual worlds or developing tools to bring these environments to life, OpenUSD offers a robust framework that fosters collaboration, improves efficiency, and simplifies the integration of complex data into cohesive, interactive 3D models.
NVIDIA is working closely with partners and the open-source community to accelerate and expand the adoption of OpenUSD across industries. NVIDIA, along with Pixar, Adobe, Apple, and Autodesk, co-founded the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), dedicated to promoting the standardization, development, evolution, and growth of OpenUSD.
OpenUSD Powers Automotive Factory Design and Deployment
He Hongyan, Chief Engineer of Process Automation at Geely Automobile, stated, "Using the collaborative design platform built on OpenUSD and NVIDIA Omniverse™, we have achieved data fusion of industrial software, reducing the white body automation debugging time from 34 days to 20 days, significantly saving costs and improving productivity."

He Hongyan's team at Geely Automobile leverages the NVIDIA Omniverse platform and OpenUSD to optimize design processes, improve production efficiency, and achieve flexible manufacturing, further driving the digital transformation of the automotive industry.
He Hongyan's team developed a "zero-risk debugging technology" solution. This solution covers multiple dimensions including design, simulation, programming, and debugging through collaborative design and digital twin technology, promoting the testing and optimization of the entire welding process and ultimately achieving rapid factory design and deployment.
He Hongyan also revealed the reasons behind developing this solution, saying, "When dealing with the production needs of multiple brands and multiple models, enterprises face pressure in terms of delivery capacity and flexibility. At the same time, when using multiple industrial CAD software from different suppliers, there are problems such as insufficient performance of large-scene rendering and low cross-software collaboration efficiency. Therefore, we used Omniverse to develop a collaborative design platform to reduce costs and improve the R&D efficiency of enterprises."
He Hongyan's team uses Omniverse to help discrete manufacturing companies seamlessly connect tooling design experts, simulation engineering experts, rendering experts, and project managers, integrating engineering design platforms in areas such as CAD design and digital twins, bringing them powerful digital innovation capabilities and results. This has reduced the overall debugging time from 34 days to 20 days, accelerated collaboration among module engineers, reduced communication costs, and significantly improved productivity by saving time and compressing the cost budget of debugging suppliers.
In addition, He Hongyan also outlined future plans: "We will optimize and improve the system around business coverage, standard construction, accuracy improvement, and digitalization to gradually move towards full-factory flexible manufacturing. At the same time, we are also promoting this system to more discrete manufacturing factories and gradually transforming it into a market standard solution."
Finally, He Hongyan also emphasized the advantages and cooperation potential of the NVIDIA ecosystem: "In the discrete manufacturing industry such as automotive manufacturing, the production of diversified products brings challenges such as production line setup, production planning, and personnel changes. Through AI algorithms and deep learning technologies, the manufacturing process of the assembly line can be optimized. By interacting with the NVIDIA ecosystem, we can reach more partners and provide rich industrial experience and implementation scenarios."
