NVIDIA DLSS is an AI rendering technology supported by NVIDIA RTX™ GPUs, enabling faster frame rates, improved image quality, and exceptional responsiveness. The DLSS 3.5 update includes super-resolution and DLAA (applicable to all RTX GPUs), frame generation (Ada Lovelace architecture RTX GPUs), and ray reconstruction (applicable to all RTX GPUs).

Previously, we introduced the principles and development history of DLSS (click to view previous issues). In this issue, we will use an NVIDIA RTX™ 5000 Ada architecture GPU to intuitively experience DLSS's practical performance in the professional graphics domain.

1. Chaos Vantage

With the release of Chaos Vantage 2, update 1, Vantage introduces new features including NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 denoiser.

The AI-driven NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 denoiser maintains realism while tripling rendering speed. It employs ray reconstruction technology to enhance image clarity and reduce noise, especially when navigating scenes. This allows users to enjoy a higher-quality real-time experience while maintaining color and lighting accuracy, facilitating scene review and fine-tuning.

In Vantage, rendering is compared in three ways: using DLSS 3.5 Ray Construction (ray reconstruction), Vantage, and Optix AI based on ray tracing from left to right. With DLSS ray reconstruction enabled, the frame rate exceeds three times that without DLSS.

Carefully comparing the rendering quality of the three methods, it is evident that enabling ray reconstruction improves rendering accuracy and image quality.

2. Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine is an open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool, providing freedom and control for game developers and creators in crafting advanced real-time 3D content, interactive experiences, and immersive virtual worlds.

NVIDIA DLSS 3 for Unreal Engine includes DLSS super-resolution and DLSS frame generation plugins.

DLSS 3 plugins only support DLSS frame generation for Unreal Engine 5.3 and 5.2. For using DLSS frame generation in previous engine versions, refer to the UE 5.1, 5.0, and 4.27 Frame Generation Quick Start Guide:


In UE, rendering is also compared in three ways: enabling DLSS with Frame Generation (FG), enabling DLSS without FG, and disabling DLSS. With DLSS Frame Generation enabled, the real-time rendering frame rate exceeds 100 frames per second, while without FG, the frame rate is only around 70 frames per second. Completely disabling DLSS results in a frame rate of around 40 frames per second.

3. NVIDIA Omniverse USD Composer

NVIDIA Omniverse™ USD Composer is one of the foundational applications of Omniverse, built for creative and technical workflows with OpenUSD, an advanced RTX-accelerated tool for scene assembly, synthesis, and rendering.

For this test, a relatively complex indoor architectural design scene was chosen, and camera functions were used to navigate the scene to observe real-time rendering smoothness and frame rate.

By using DLSS frame generation and comparing it with not using DLSS frame generation, it is visually apparent that enabling DLSS frame generation results in faster real-time rendering and smoother scene navigation. In Omniverse USD Composer, enabling DLSS 3 frame generation doubles the real-time rendering frame rate compared to not enabling DLSS 3 frame generation.

4. Conclusion

From this test, it is evident that with the support of professional graphics cards, NVIDIA DLSS plays a significant role in accelerating real-time rendering for professional graphic design software. It can maintain real-time rendering quality and high resolution while increasing rendering speed, providing greater assistance for real-time rendering work that seeks a WYSIWYG experience.
